Phones on the Moon
Technology Source March 25th, 2008I read an interesting article about lunar phones. Apparently NASA and the UK are teaming up and going to try and get phones that will have reach all the way to the moon. This appears to be something they can do this century and things should really get rolling around 2020. There was a historic momment in cell phone history when a text message was able to reach the top of Mount Everest. I believe when the first text message is received on the moon later this century, it will top that cell phone momment.
The proposed satellite system is projected for the South Pole on the moon around 2020 and this could enable a new way to communicate globally and into space. The cell phone revolution is here and it looks like it’s only going to increase in popularity and reach with all the modern technology that continues to be developed. The person that does receive that first phone call or text message on the moon, might just be as famous as Neil Armstrong; when he was the first man to step on the moon’s surface. Instead of the famous line “one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind”, the cell phone user on the moon might simply say “can you hear me now”?
