The NBA is a magical league this time of the year. There are so many teams trying to get one of those top 8 spots in either the Western or Eastern conferences. The Atlanta Hawks had the worse record out of all of the playoff teams and they gave the Boston Celtics a great 7 game series in the playoffs. It’s a little different for the young Hawk’s team this year and they are above 500 for the year and currently have the 4th seed in the Eastern division. They are trying real hard to hold on to that spot, because only the top 4 seeds get home court advantage in the first round and the Hawks feel they really need that this year. They didn’t lose a game last year on their home floor during the playoffs, so maybe the home cooking this year can get them to the 2nd round.

The Miami Heat hopes to move up to that 4th spot too in the East and they are working really hard to win games right now. The leading scorer in the NBA this year has been Dwayne Wade and the Heat is heavily relying on him right now. The Miami Heat have more road games left on their schedule; while the Hawks get to enjoy the most home games left in the NBA. They did take a positive step on Saturday night beating the Detroit Pistons and that was a really close game for Atlanta.

The whole NBA has a lot of close matchups for the teams trying to make the playoffs or just trying to get a higher seed. The Los Angeles Lakers are flying high in the tough Western conference and they lead all other NBA teams in win this year. Basketball is going to be fun to watch in the NBA and it should be interesting to see where the Atlanta Hawks end up seeded in the playoffs. All of those Hawk’s home games will be against a lot of good opponents and they will have to face this year’s best team in the Los Angeles Lakers and last year’s champ Boston Celtics will also be appearing in Atlanta this year. A true story that occurred in the minors of major league baseball when one team traded 10 maple bats for a minor league player. That player was John C. Odom and he seem to take it in stride and would often joke about how this will be a big story when he makes it to the big leagues. The trip to the big leagues will never happen because Mr. Odom was found dead back in November of a drug overdose. Some teammates said he didn’t smile as much as he once did and perhaps being traded for bats did get to him more than it appeared to.

No player should have to deal with the burden of being traded for bats and it wasn’t a good move on the team’s part. Players get traded for a variety of things these days and it’s common to hear about cash or draft picks involved in any professional sports trade. I don’t think there has ever been a case in recent times where a professional athlete was traded for sporting equipment. A major league bat made of maple isn’t necessarily a cheap item, but even with a value of 300 to 500 dollars is a sign of disrespect in terms of trade value. The sudden death of John Odom will certainly out weigh the costs the team would have given up if they would have just released the minor league baseball player. There will be a lot of mending that needs to come from this and even Major League Baseball needs to step up and take action and see that another player isn’t ever traded for a bat, balls, gloves, or any other type of sporting equipment items.
